Soliloquies in Shakespeare
This week we will learn about soliloquies! You will learn what a soliloquy is; read a famous soliloquy by the King of Soliloquies, Mr. William Shakespeare; translate it into English you can understand; and compose your own soliloquy after reading about the ways in which nature inspires magic!
Monday: 1) Rewrite your lyric poems with your peers' edits. Be sure your poems includes all the requirements:
- 2 stanzas
- 2 similes
- 2 metaphors
- 3 vocabulary words
- describes an emotional story from a 1st-person perspective
Email your poem to Ms. Nina OR print it and turn it in at the beginning of class tomorrow. This is a summative grade!
2) Read 10-20 minutes of your SSR.
Tuesday: 1) Read 10-20 minutes of your SSR.
2) Add words to your vocabulary journal.
Wednesday: 1) Read 10-20 minutes of your SSR.
2) We went over some great words today, such as penned, tempest, exile, conjure, excerpt, rightful, and rejoice. Add them to your vocabulary journal!
Thursday: 1) Finish answering the analysis questions. You must write in complete sentences and you must use textual evidence for at least one question to support your answers. (The modern translation of the text is attached below.)
2) Add words to your vocabulary journal. Be sure to have 6 words, definitions, and example sentences for tomorrow!
3) Read 10-20 minutes of your SSR.
Friday: Your vocabulary journals are due!

- Is Prospero’s speech a good example of a soliloquy? Why or why not?
- What words or phrases tell you that magic is at hand?
- What does Prospero plan to do with his source of power?
- What does that tell you about Prospero’s character?
- Identify and explain your favorite example of imagery from this text.

- Optional Prompt: You wished and prayed that your “frienemy” would disappear. One day, you and your frienemy were walking through the grass. She or he happened to walk into a fairy ring and – boom! – suddenly vanished. Do you dare enter the fairy ring to go after her/him?
