Assignment: Something is wrong with Mom (or someone very dear to you). She's acting so strange. In fact, she's keeping a secret.
Write a story, using your best descriptive writing, that depicts how your mom is acting and, at the end, reveals the big secret. Your story must include dialogue so you can practice your dialogue punctuation. However, your story may not include the phrase, "Mom, you're acting strange," or any variation thereof. Don't tell us (the readers) she's acting strange; instead describe it! Post your final stories, with my corrections, here: Here is your writing prompt for your homework this weekend: “The chest was empty, except for some dead insects. At first Anthony was disappointed. He was about to close the lid when something stopped him. From inside the chest a whispering sound came. It was like many voices talking together, saying words that he couldn’t understand. Anthony felt hypnotized. Suddenly a blackness opened up before him. Gripping the sides of the box, he went on staring. Then he began to feel the growing urge to clamber over the sides of the chest and throw himself in…” The chest is magical. What happens next? Write the story. It should be 2 handwritten A4 pages or 1 page typed (12 pt font, double spaced). This is due Monday. What did you learn during the magazine unit? What did you like? dislike? How will you apply your new knowledge of magazine writing to future writing? Tell me all this and more in your 5-paragraph essay about the magazine-writing unit! Remember to start with an introduction paragraph that includes a hook, connecting sentence, and thesis. Then write three well-developed paragraphs about the above topics. Finally, finish it off with a conclusion paragraph that restates the purpose of your essay and offers a final insight. I can't wait to read what you learned! Due Monday, May 12.
