In class, we have looked at several stories about oppression. In I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, Marguerite Jackson is a young Black girl in the segregated South of the United States in the 1940s. In The Book Thief, Death followed a young girl and her family who were fleeing Nazi Germany. What's your story? Write about an instance of oppression, real or fictional, where your character feels oppressed by another culture. Be sure to include details about the character's minority culture, as well as the oppressor's dominate culture. Post the final drafts of your stories, including Ms. Nina's edits, here. To post, click "Add Comment" below. Have you ever ventured outside of your comfort zone like Xiangxue? Write about a time, real or fictional, when you or a character made a journey that changed your or your character's life. What happened? What did you or your character learn? Include cultural metaphors and similes like Tie Ning, the author of O Xiangxue, did this story. Post the final drafts of your stories, with Ms. Nina's revisions, here!
