Assignment: Something is wrong with Mom (or someone very dear to you). She's acting so strange. In fact, she's keeping a secret.
Write a story, using your best descriptive writing, that depicts how your mom is acting and, at the end, reveals the big secret. Your story must include dialogue so you can practice your dialogue punctuation. However, your story may not include the phrase, "Mom, you're acting strange," or any variation thereof. Don't tell us (the readers) she's acting strange; instead describe it! Post your final stories, with my corrections, here, by Monday, September 15. Here is your writing prompt for your homework: “The chest was empty, except for some dead insects. At first Anthony was disappointed. He was about to close the lid when something stopped him. From inside the chest a whispering sound came. It was like many voices talking together, saying words that he couldn’t understand. Anthony felt hypnotized. Suddenly a blackness opened up before him. Gripping the sides of the box, he went on staring. Then he began to feel the growing urge to clamber over the sides of the chest and throw himself in…” The chest is magical. What happens next? Write the story. It should be 2 handwritten A4 pages or 1 page typed (12 pt font, double spaced). Write a 3-5 page proposal to Mr. Bennett that proposes an Anti-Bullying Campaign for MIS.
- The Problem: Bullying at MIS, - The Solution - Cost (if applicable) - Conclusion For an example of a proposal, check out: http://examples.yourdictionary.com/what-is-example-informal-written-proposal.html DUE: Thursday, May 8. Serious question: Is it possible to combat bullying? How? Tonight your homework is to write a three-paragraph essay answering this question. Do research, and cite your research. You must include at least 2 references, which you will list on your Reference Page. Write your reference page in APA format. To learn how to do this, go to: https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01/ (Be sure to check the sidebar for how to reference different kinds of sources, such as electronic sources, including websites: https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/10/) This weekend, you have a three-part assignment:

Please write down your ideas in your notebook. 3. Bring in a magazine or newspaper article that you like. We will use this article next week to analyze news writing. In class, we have been dissecting the anatomy of the academic paragraph. Thanks to the 5-sentence model, you all now have masterful knowledge for how to write the fundamental part of a paper!
Below, you will find useful connecting words to help you write an academic paragraph. Remember, these connecting words are your secret weapons for getting good marks every time. Use them! In a five-paragraph essay, talk to me about plagiarism. What is it? Why is it wrong? Your five paragraphs should be formatted as follows: 1. Introduction - introduce what you are talking about, and summarize your three points; 2. First reason why plagiarism is wrong, plus justification and support; 3. Second reason why plagiarism is wrong, plus justification; 4. Third reason why plagiarism is wrong, plus justification; and 5. Conclusion paragraph. Remember to cite any references. The purpose of this assignment is to ensure that you all thoroughly understand the severity of plagiarism. It is theft. It is illegal. It will result in serious consequences. Let's learn not to do it now so that we don't get punished later. Due Date: Tuesday, Nov. 5 Worth: 50 points! *Note that this essay can be hand-written or typed. If it is typed, please bring a printed copy to class. Due Date: Monday, November 4. Please post your very scary stories as a comment to this post. Leave positive comments to the authors who scared the heebie-jeebies out of you. :) Due Date: Monday, October 28.
ASSIGNMENT DESCRIPTION The ending of The Giver is one that many of you called: · weird, · strange, · nonsensical, and · illogical. Our young protagonist, Jonas, sleds “downwards, downwards, faster and faster” (p. 224). He hears what he is sure must be music ahead of him, and perhaps even behind him… But, then again, “perhaps it was only an echo” (p. 224). In this way, the author, Lois Lowry, leaves the reader wondering, WHAT HAPPENED?! ASSIGNMENT Write an additional chapter describing what, in fact, happened to Jonas. Did he live happily ever after? Or not? This assignment needs to be 2 pages minimum, typed on your word processor (such as Microsoft Word), and double spaced.
